How to Choose the Right Storage Water Heater Capacity

Capacity is a system decision, not just a number

When buyers start a project, the first question is usually “how many litres?” It feels like the most technical question, but capacity is really the answer to a set of simpler questions: how many people use hot water, how often they use it at the same time, and how much space and electrical capacity the installation can support.

A tank that is too small forces the heating element to run continuously during peak hours and produces complaints about cold showers. A tank that is too large costs more, weighs more, and may not fit the available wall area at all. The goal is not the biggest tank — it is the tank that matches the way hot water will actually be used.

This guide walks through the six checks we recommend to buyers before confirming a model, whether you are ordering for a residential project, a hotel refurbishment, or a distribution programme.

Step 1: Map how hot water will be used

Start with usage, not with volume.

  • Number of regular users. A single occupant, a family of four, and a guesthouse with ten rooms describe three completely different demand profiles.
  • Peak-time overlap. If two people shower back to back within a few minutes, the tank must cover both without waiting for a full reheat. If showers are spread across the morning, a smaller tank can often keep up.
  • Number of outlets. A shower head, a kitchen sink, and a washbasin may all draw from the same unit. Each outlet adds to simultaneous demand.
  • Season of use. In colder regions, incoming water is colder, so the unit needs more energy — and more time — to reach the same outlet temperature. This is a common oversight in projects destined for Central Asia, northern India, and other markets with cold water supply in winter.

Write these four items down before looking at any catalogue. They will narrow the range far more than a specification sheet can.

Step 2: Convert demand into a capacity range

As a practical starting point, buyers typically work in these bands:

Typical situationUsual capacity band
Single user, washbasin or small shower, space-limited installation30 L – 40 L
Couple or small family, one shower at a time50 L – 60 L
Family of four or more, overlapping morning demand80 L – 100 L
Small commercial use, staff facilities, small guesthouse80 L – 100 L, often multiple units

Wulin Feng offers models from 30 L to 100 L, which covers the majority of residential and light commercial requirements. Where demand exceeds a single tank, two units are often a better answer than one very large unit: they distribute weight, allow redundancy, and let the installation follow the building’s layout.

Step 3: Check installation space and mounting conditions

Capacity and physical size are related but not identical. Two tanks of the same volume can differ in height, width, and depth depending on orientation and design.

Before confirming a model, verify:

  • The wall or floor area available, including clearance for service access
  • The load-bearing capacity of the mounting surface
  • The position of valves, pipes, and electrical connections
  • Whether the unit will be installed vertically or horizontally — this alone changes which series is suitable

Our separate guide on vertical and horizontal layouts covers this decision in detail.

Step 4: Match the electrical configuration to the destination market

A water heater that is technically excellent but electrically incompatible with the destination market creates problems at installation and after-sales.

Wulin Feng’s catalogue includes 220–240 V, 50/60 Hz models with different rated power options. When selecting, confirm:

  • The destination country’s nominal voltage and frequency
  • The rated power that the building’s wiring and circuit protection can support
  • Plug, cable, and connection requirements at the point of installation
  • Any local certification or labelling requirements for the market

The correct combination depends on the project. Send us the destination country and site conditions and we will advise which configuration fits.

Step 5: Account for climate and incoming water temperature

Capacity is stored volume; recovery time is how quickly the unit returns to temperature after use. Cold incoming water lengthens recovery and effectively reduces how much hot water is available for a second shower.

In markets with cold winters or cold ground water, the practical approach is to move one band up from the mild-climate recommendation, or to specify a higher rated power where the electrical installation allows it. Both choices should be discussed with the project’s electrical contractor.

Step 6: Plan for spare parts and after-sales

For distributors and project buyers, the commercial decision matters as much as the technical one. Consider:

  • Availability of spare parts such as heating elements, thermostats, and safety components
  • Consistency of models across repeat orders
  • Whether the supplier can support OEM or CKD arrangements for your market
  • Documentation and labelling in the required language

A model that can be serviced and reordered reliably is worth more over a five-year programme than a marginally cheaper alternative.

Common mistakes we see

  1. Sizing on tank volume alone without checking peak overlap.
  2. Assuming the same model suits every destination market regardless of voltage and frequency.
  3. Ignoring wall strength and service clearance until installation day.
  4. Forgetting that recovery time, not capacity, drives most user complaints.
  5. Ordering a single large unit where two smaller units would install and service more easily.

Send us your project requirements

For a recommendation that is actually useful, share the following with the Wulin Feng team:

  • Required capacity range or expected daily hot water demand
  • Quantity per order
  • Destination country and market
  • Installation orientation (vertical or horizontal)
  • Preferred power rating and electrical conditions on site
  • Any OEM, CKD, or labelling requirements
